George West froze its building codes in place and wrote the freeze into the ordinance. Section 10-23 adopts the 2006 editions of the building, residential, fire, plumbing, mechanical, fuel gas, property maintenance and existing building codes and the 2008 National Electrical Code, and subsection (b) states that subsequent editions and amendments do not become effective unless the council specifically adopts them.

Twenty years on, that is still the codified text. Carrizo Springs, at the far end of this service area, adopted the 2024 building code in July 2024.
